A gift is an attempt to fulfil one of our deepest and noblest wishes: to help those we love be happy. But few challenges are as hard as that of making another person content. How can we find an object that does justice to the real needs of someone we cherish?
Mostly, we settle on finding things that address the frustrations and appetites of the body — like expensive liqueurs, lavender bath bombs and memory-foam pillows.
But if most of our problems actually in the end come down to our minds, what we should really focus on are presents that promise to address the truly big question that trouble and motivate us: What sort of relationship do I want? What direction should my career take? How do I find the calm and contentment I long for — and more profitably spend my leisure hours?
