60% Off THANKSGIVING Codeword Continues

Howdy!

I am recovering this morning after hosting four (!) major events this weekend at our Mile High Comics Jason St. Mega-Store. My day began at 4:30 AM on Saturday, as I arose really early so that I could finish cleaning my Pueblo Indian pottery gallery for our scheduled mid-afternoon public tour. While I was cleaning my 70+ glass showcases and vacuuming rugs in my 2nd floor gallery space, Will, Pam, Lynne, Lisa, Noah, Trish, and David put the finishing touches on both our No-Minimum-Bid Comics and Toys Auction, and our Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament.

The net result of all of our hard work were three amazingly successful events. Our first poker game in 18 months attracted 60 very excited players, and raised $1,500 (through entry fees) to purchase hats, gloves, socks, scarves, and blankets for the homeless people living in the tent colonies in downtown Denver. Our auction was similarly successful, raising another $1,000+ for the homeless, as well as $2,000+ to help my beloved wife, Nanette, to catch up on company bills. My tour of my pottery gallery was also extremely gratifying, with those who attended asking great questions, and loving my new-expanded displays.

On a side note, I do still have another 2,000 pieces of my pottery left to unpack from our move from 56th Ave. (4 years ago!), but the 8,000+ that are currently on display create a visual feast that is almost beyond anyone's ability to absorb, at least in under a several-hour span. After 25 years of avid collecting, I now am blessed to own hundreds upon hundreds of totally unique Pueblo hand-built ceramic creations, with the diversity of my overall collection now exceeding those of even the largest public institutions in America. Simply put, nowhere in the world can you see as many incredibly rare Pueblo ceramics as are now on display in my Pueblo Treasures gallery. Just saying…

Poker winners

Returning to the subject of our events, I spent all of yesterday (Sunday) morning and early afternoon utilizing the $2,500 that we raised to purchase protective cold weather clothing and blankets for Denver's homeless. The manager of the Church Ranch Road Dollar Tree location assured me that I had set a new single-purchase record for her store, after I paid her $1,526 (!) for eight shopping carts filled with hats, socks, scarves, toiletries, and small plush toys (for the homeless children…) in a single transaction.

I followed up my massive purchase of smaller items with a $1,000 acquisition of 100+ 72"X80" moving blankets at Harbor Freight. The people who sleep in the tent colonies of downtown use these quilted moving blankets as ground pads, specifically to ward off the chill that emanates from sleeping on the bitterly cold concrete sidewalks. Even though almost all of the money that we raised through our charity events is now gone, I will be heading out to other Dollar Tree and Harbor Freight locations later today, to purchase even more cold weather gear. The need out there on the streets is simply too great for me to stop now…

So you know, one of the reasons why it is so important for me to help out our poorest Denver citizens is that our mayor, Michael B. Hancock, has created a truly malicious task force that conducts "sweeps" of our homeless camps on a weekly basis. Armed police officers arrive (oftentimes in the freezing pre-dawn hours) to roust our most poverty-stricken citizens people from their tents, and then sanitation workers utilizing a specially-fitted bobcat forklift crush their tents (and other belongings), and load the meager detritus of these desperate people's lives into trash trucks destined for the landfill. To see the horror of just how this occurs, you can view innumerable short videos of (many) such incidents on the DenverHomelessOutLoud Facebook page. Truthfully, after watching the first few of those videos I had to quit, as such profound injustice and oppression fills me with inner rage that is both unkind, and very unhealthy.

In any event, my fourth event for this weekend was our All-Ages Drag and Talent Show on Sunday evening. This was our third monthly iteration since restarting, and turned out to be our very best show, ever. My drag persona, Bettie Pages, normally opens every show with one of her dynamic performances (always in a beautiful gown totally covered in bling), but her recent eye surgery precluded applying any make-up for another week. That being the case, I performed instead as Charles, wearing my most ragged old clothes, and acting out my rage against Mayor Hancock and his gang of utterly craven quislings via a very theatrical lip-synch interpretation of the iconic social justice song "What It's Like" by Everlast. Local events aside, our weekend was beyond huge because of my very spontaneous decision on Friday morning to initiate a 60% off THANKSGIVING! codeword sale on all ten million+ of our back issue comics and magazines. During just the first 72 hours, that new 60% off sale generated enough new online orders to completely catch up Nanette's bills (that she pays for the company), and to make her feel much better about my leaving on Friday morning on (yet another) 6,000+ mile comic book buying trip to the upper Midwest and East Coast.

So you know, I already have 15 individual home visits scheduled during this latest in my wonderful series of epic comics-buying journeys, so I am quite certain that I will bring back even more treasures to enhance our selections for you. Truth be told, aside from my pottery purchases for my Pueblo Treasures gallery, I spend almost no money on myself. Every dollar that we raise through our sales in Jason St. (and through our milehighcomics.com website) is reinvested in making the array of cool comics and collectibles options that we can offer you even better.

In a nutshell, that is why (as innumerable numbers of our visitors regularly attest online), Mile High Comics has grown to become the very best and most diverse repository of comics and pop culture collectibles to be found anywhere in the world. That having been said, in just a few weeks I will be turning 67, and having now survived multiple bouts of West Nile encephalitis, skin cancer, a life-threatening hernia, and cataracts in both eyes, I harbor no illusions about the permanence of my existence. I am still here for now, however, and feeling pretty darn good, so I promise you that I am going continue to seek to live my life to its fullest. Thank you ever so much for all of your kindness and support as I continue on my blessed journey, and never forget that serving you has brought profound joy into my life.
