My wife and I recently watched Mia Hansen-Løve's latest offering, Bergman Island, and we haven't been able to stop thinking or talking about it since. The movie follows Chris Sanders and her husband Tony as a filmmaking couple who visit Fårö Island, the former home and creative retreat of Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman (hence the movie's name). Over the course of the movie, Chris feels as if she is being pulled apart by the forces of motherhood and a desire to create meaningful art. This personal journey gives birth to a new story which is told as a movie inside a movie. Beautifully written, shot, and acted, Bergman Island is an experience that will take up residence in the corners of your mind for hours, days, and perhaps even weeks after the screen goes black.
