Mile High Comics Is Buying!

Howdy!

In December, 1996, I walked into our local Toys 'r" Us store here in Boulder, and dropped $1,200 (in cash) to purchase the (approximately) 50 unopened boxes of Pokemon cards that they had just received. I paid them their full retail price solely because our traditional card suppliers were totally sold out, and were telling us that they would not get any restock of Pokémon for many months. In the meantime, we had parents and children swarming into our store, and the phone was ringing off the hook, all with inquiries about Pokemon cards.

My decision to utilize a major national retailer as a wholesale source turned out fantastically well for us. We marked up those Pokémon card packs, first by double, and then by triple, and still totally sold out within two weeks. Of even greater importance was the fact that, through that bold action, we greatly enhanced our reputation as being a reliable source for scarce cards in the Denver area. This served us profoundly well in the years to come, as we subsequently sold thousands of boxes of the various Marvel and DC card releases, as well as a vast spectrum of other non-sport and role-playing cards.

I mention this bit of our history because I believe that we are about to enter a similar period of scarcity and unfulfilled demand. We are already having our suppliers tell us that they are running short (or completely out) of comic book bags and boards, and many popular comics trade paperbacks and hardback book titles are now totally unavailable from our distributors, presumably because they are caught up in the unprecedented supply chain fiasco that has overwhelmed our American ports.

All of the above having been said, I believe that the real shortage for our upcoming holiday gift-giving season is going to be in toys, as that genre is particularly dependent upon shipments from China. News reports that I have read in my business journals speak not only to that impending scarcity, but also to significant price increases due to shipping costs that are running as much as 10X pre-Covid levels. Truly, this is an (almost) unprecedented crisis.

In case you are wondering, I just wrote "almost" an unprecedented crisis because I very successfully traversed a similar supply chain fiasco, all the way, waaay, back in 1977. That was the year that the first STAR WARS movie was released. It may seem unbelievable today, but the toy and theater moguls of 1977 expressed universal disdain for that epic movie after seeing the advance previews. As a direct result, Lucas had no major toy deal in place until Hasbro signed on just before the film had its official release, on May 25th, 1977.

Even with Hasbro on board, initial orders for the 1977 Star Wars toys were anemic, at best. The toy industry simply did not believe at all in the viability of the film (or the toys based upon the characters), so hardly anyone ordered any of the initial releases. In a nutshell, that is why many of those earliest Hasbro Star Wars action figures and play sets bring such staggering prices in today's collector market.

As regards Mile High Comics, I was hustling like crazy during the summer of 1977 to bring in as many Star Wars items as I possibly could. Smaller entrepreneurs of the day were creating buttons, bumper stickers, and publishing grainy 8X10 photos. Those sold for us in astounding quantities. We were also buying massive quantities of the original movie posters from a distributor in New York who (seemingly) had access to an unlimited supply. As I recall, we sold (at least) 500 one-sheets at $20 each, about 50 three-sheets at $50, and about a dozen of the gigantic six-sheet (billboard size) poster arrays at $100. Boy howdy, I sure wish that I had some of those today…

As regards the actual Hasbro toy releases, we had none. Nor did anyone else. If I recall correctly, Lucas and Hasbro sold gift certificates during the 1977 Christmas season that promised Star Wars figures in early 1978, once they finally arrived from China. It was a truly crazy period of time.

Fast-forward to today, and I am seeing a similar crisis of supply looming on the horizon. Instead of just one genre, however, I am of the belief that store shelves are going to be bare across-the-board after Black Friday, with not only almost all toys disappearing, but also all manner of other potential holiday gifts. Making everything in China (and other nations of the Far East) may have once seemed a great idea from a cost perspective, but if you can't get your finished goods delivered in a timely manner, then it can turn into a total disaster. Everyone had better buckle in (and buy your holiday gifts immediately) as I truly believe that this holiday season is going to be very, very rough.

As regards Mile High Comics, I think that this is actually going to be our best holiday season, ever. Unlike other retailers, we purchase almost all of our toy selections directly from private collectors, so there is no way that we are ever going to run short. Thanks to the diligent efforts of Will, Pam, (and myself), we have easily doubled the number of rare toys (and other truly cool collectibles) that we have on display today in our wonderful Jason St. Mega-Store, and we are very actively seeking to buy (or trade) for even more scarce and unique items. Simply put, every cent that we are earning from our current very generous 60% off HALLOWEEN! back issue comics and magazines codeword sale is being recommitted to buying toys and collectibles for the upcoming holiday season. Before I leave the topic of our impending holiday shortages, let me emphasize that I believe that this is (in all probability) going to be a very short-lived crisis. Our economic system is remarkably resilient these days, and can recover from discontinuities very quickly. Just as we experienced a 90% decline our Star Wars merchandise sales at Mile High Comics in the first quarter of 1978 (after the immense shipments of Hasbro toys from China finally hit the big box stores…), I think that the first quarter of 2022 is going to experience a staggering decrease in demand for all manner of gift items that were intensely popular just a month prior. That is why I am going all-out to buy toys and other collectibles of all kinds right now, and will actually scale back our buying efforts once we get into December. That's when I will (once again) spend my every last dime on acquiring even more great old comic books. Some things will never change… 'Nuff said.
