Graphic Novels Discounted - Comics 60% Off

Howdy!

It should come as no surprise to anyone that LABORDAY!, our first 60% off back issue comics and magazine sale for this year, has been quite successful. Orders coming in from our clients from all around the world are forwarded by e-mail to my cellphone, and quite frankly, I have had a hard time keeping up with reading them. A couple of clear trends have emerged, however, and I thought that you might find them interesting.

First, our Silver Age and Bronze Age comics in lower grades have proven to be remarkably popular at 60% off. With a startlingly high number of older comics now being sent each month to be "slabbed" by CGC and CBCS, the number of older comics that are not sealed in hard plastic is diminishing by the day. To give you an idea of why this is a problem, consider that CGC supposedly hired 125+ additional staff members earlier this year. That enormous increase in their grading/slabbing capacity has done little to diminish their "wait" times, which I have seen anecdotally reported to still be at 4-6 months. Nonetheless, their vastly increased capacity to diminish the number of "raw" copies available in the marketplace has led to a nationwide shortage of older (1930's-1980's) comics, in any grade. Prices for "raw" copies of older comics, not surprisingly, are rising vigorously as a result.

Trades area

A second major trend that I have observed is an increased recognition among our clients that many graphic novels, trade paperbacks, and comics hardbacks are now out-of-print, and may never again be rereleased. I was among the first to see this as an impending trend, and began buying up (and hoarding) as many older comics-related books as I could possibly afford, beginning about ten years ago. That is how/why our on-hand book inventory grew from about 50,000 volumes in 2011, to over 300,000 volumes today. Simply put, it is my opinion that the blossoming of comics-related book publishing that began in the comics world in about 1990 is far past it's peak , and that there is now a scramble by those who still treasure the enjoyment of reading older graphic stories in printed form to locate, and purchase, the last remaining copies floating about in the secondary market.

In a nutshell, I believe that it is that creeping realization that book collections of older comics stories (which were once commonly available at half of cover price in used bookstores…) are no longer nearly as available as they once were, is what has triggered the staggering increase in our online response. To be clear, our graphic novels, trade paperbacks, and comics-related hardback books do not qualify for the 60% off LABORDAY! codeword sale, as that massive discount applies only to our ten million+ back issue comics and magazines (excepting new issues, a few variants, and our professionally-graded items). Were we to be so foolish as to discount our books by 60%, I think that our shelves would be stripped bare within days, and that we would then struggle to fill all of those (hypothetical) orders by the end of 2021.

While I was wanting to include our books in this end-of-the summer "thank you!" for our very best clients, rather than applying the LABORDAY! codeword to our books, I had a temporary 20% reduction put into place (right on our website) on all of our comics-related hardbacks, and a 30% savings applied to all of our graphic novels and comic trade paperbacks. Those are the first discounts (of any kind) that we have offered on my beloved books in over a year, and have resulted in an approximate 500% (!) increase in our book sales since last Thursday. Wow. That is a truly amazing increase.

OK, that's it for today. I need to now get some early-morning mowing done here at my farm, and then head into Denver to sort comics and books all day. With our inventory team shifted over to help with fulfilling the 60% off LABORDAY! orders that we have already received, my current efforts are critically important to our maintaining a flow of restock (from recently-purchased collections) into our online inventory. Truth be told, that is a task in which I engage with genuine pleasure.
