Hi, movie fans!

It's traditionally a quiet time between the Oscars and summer moviegoing season, and this year is no different.

On the movies desk, we're giving a lot of thought to how the return to theaters will play out. Studios are starting to hold advance screenings in person, but even with social distancing rules in place, it's a delicate dance. Some writers and editors are happy, excited even, to go back to watching movies on the big screen. Others have concerns and are sticking to watching via secure links. I'm letting them decide for themselves what they're comfortable with. How are you feeling about the reopening of theaters? Tell us at moviesupdate@nytimes.com.

I mentioned the Oscars up top and we now have a little insight into the decisions behind that strange telecast. One of its producers, Steven Soderbergh, told The Los Angeles Times that the move to end the ceremony with the best actor and actress categories was "always part of the plan," and wasn't necessarily tied to the widely held expectation that Chadwick Boseman would win posthumously. He added, "The goal was to really do something different and let the academy sift through the response and decide what they would do going forward."

If you've caught up with the Oscar winners, we have suggestions for movies to watch this week. Among new releases, our critic A.O. Scott describes "State Funeral," Sergei Loznitsa's documentary about the aftermath of Stalin's death, as "fascinating and elusive." Or try Tran Quoc Bao's "Paper Tigers," a reworking of the kung fu comedy that charmed the critic Beatrice Loayza. On streaming, there are options for Mother's Day, too.

If you want something more family-oriented, there's "The Water Man," the directing debut of the actor David Oyelowo. He told our reporter Nicole Sperling that he took on the job after an eye-opening conversation with his son made him realize "I have to fight" for stories that show off the complexities of people of color.

Finally, after watching "Raya and the Last Dragon," our writer Kyle Buchanan had just one question: Are animated dads getting hotter? Read his report that includes a surprise guest with an unexpected answer.

Enjoy the movies!
