The junior college football documentary series "Last Chance U" takes on a new sport here, following the basketball team at East Los Angeles College. It's less harrowing and depressing than its predecessors, in some ways because basketball culture is less militarized than football culture and also because the head coach this season, John Mosley, is not as volatile. Sure, he gets worked up and shouts, but one of the most intense moments happens during a practice when he keeps the players in silence for eight minutes. That's a long time to be quiet in a group, and it highlights Mosley's sense of command. If other seasons of "Last Chance U" were more focused on redemption or fatherhood, this one's through line is leadership. It's the kind of poignant candor that defines the "Last Chance U" franchise (which also includes "Cheer"), a directness that comes from the combination of youth and exhaustion. There is no shortage of heartbreak and regret woven into the story here. If you like sports docs in general, you're not going to do better than this series, but you will also enjoy this iteration if you are looking to expand your pep-talk skills or theories of parenting.
