Nanette took down our beautiful Christmas tree yesterday, so the holidays are officially over at our house. That transition always makes us sad, as January is not exactly a cheery month. Neither is February. The days are already a bit longer, however, so we will just have to persevere for the eight weeks required for our first spring flowers to start blooming here at Jay Hill Farm. Truth be told, that time will pass very quickly for us, as we do tend to pack a lot into our days (and nights) during the winter. Speaking of busy days, I spent my weekend clearing off our "buying tables" in the front of our Jason St. Mega-Store. January and February are two of our busiest months of the year for purchasing collections, so I spent my weekend happily stashing away the many thousands of comics, books, and pop culture items that we purchased from private collectors in December. That is just the beginning of my inventory efforts, however, as Will Moulton and I went really a bit overboard during November and December in taking advantage of last-minute opportunities to purchase Marvel and DC graphic novels, trade paperbacks, and hardback comics collections. Both publishers (in a fit of insanity?) unexpectedly decided to discontinue offering hundreds of their best backlist book titles. Will and I took one look at their discontinued lists, and in the parlance of poker, decided to go "all in" by purchasing 20,000+ (!) books. Chuck in 1 row of the books The good news is that I am delighted with our purchases, and that I actually am wishing (now that those awesome books have arrived) that we had purchased even more. The bad news is that I have to somehow squeeze our new acquisitions into shelving that in many places is already packed completely full. Sigh... I was actually already awake at 3:30 AM this morning, with my mind racing about how to accomplish this Herculean task. Blessedly, there actually is shelving space for more books available, but just not precisely where we need it to be. That disconnect necessitates physically shifting (and compressing) our existing stock of 300,000+ books to take advantage of all the empty spaces that have resulted from books being sold over the past year and a half. The last time that we undertook this immense task was 18 months ago, and it took 6 of us nearly two weeks of non-stop shifting. Once we were done we were very happy, however, as we gained enough usable shelf space for yet another 15,000 books. If shifting our book inventory were my only space consideration, I would have easily have slept through the night. What really challenges me right now, however, is how to simultaneously construct several huge arrays of 15' tall pallet racking in a warehouse that is already so full that we can barely move. We desperately need those huge steel racks (which we already own) installed in Jason St. as soon as possible, as each 50' long double-sided unit will hold approximately 750,000 back issue comics. While that sounds like a lot of new storage, we easily have 750,000 newly-purchased back issue comics already stacked in our back aisles in Jason St., plus another 750,000 still stashed in our rented storage trailers. If the past few years are any indication, we will also probably buy yet another 750,000 back issue comics during 2021. Protecting all of those beautiful comics by safely putting them away on sturdy racking is critically important to me. In case you are wondering, I keep purchasing comics (and books) with mad abandon because I absolutely believe that they are going to become increasingly difficult to obtain in years to come. As hard as it may seem to believe, current print runs for many "successful" new comics titles average fewer than 800 copies (!) per state, which I consider to be ludicrously low. Simultaneously, the perils that inevitably accompany the passage of time have resulted in innumerable millions of comic books from the "glut" period of the 1990's and early 2000's to be destroyed by fires, floods, storms, and other environmental causations. Simply put, the number of comic books extant in America is declining precipitously right now, and we are among the first to become aware that our beloved four color heritage is steadily disappearing. Years from now, I think that everyone will look back upon this period as the last moment in time when vast numbers of great comic books were still available for all. I've been in this business for 51 years, and I've witnessed during my lifetime the rise, and fall, of the entire American comic book industry. Mark my words, this is a watershed moment of opportunity, that may never come again. Join me now in buying as many old comic books as you can, while you can. Years from now, I think that you will be very glad that you did. 'Nuff said.
