Howdy! It is only 7 degrees this morning here in Boulder, and we were pummeled by a foot of snow yesterday. I am all snug and warm in my comics vault, however, and intend to spend my day sorting through personal memorabilia accumulated during my 50 years as a comic book retailer. My memorabilia treasure trove includes thousands of historic photographs, including this 27 year-old image of all the Milestone Media creators at an autograph signing in our Thornton, CO Mega-Store on March 18th, 1993. Long before the Black Lives Matter movement entered our national consciousness, I was an ardent supporter of diversity in comics. It took a while, but with the DC/Milestone titles now being optioned for streaming, recognition is finally being given to heroes (and creators) of color. That makes me very happy. Aside from sorting memorabilia (and my personal stash of comic books), I am also keeping a careful eye on the deluge of back issue comics orders that we are receiving right now as a consequence of our annual 50% off HALLOWEEN! codeword sale. My vigilance is necessary because we have been receiving an unprecedented number of orders from online resellers seeking to buy us out of our entire available supply of certain comics titles that become suddenly popular, usually because they have been optioned for a television series or movies. While we generally welcome these multiple-copy orders, we do have to exercise some degree of oversight and restraint, in order to keep at least a few copies available for our individual collectors. That having been said, the surge in overall demand growth for older comic books that we have observed transpiring via our online comics sales is also being mirrored in other collectibles fields. Within the world of collectible Pueblo Indian ceramics, for example, I have seen such a surge in demand from eager buyers over the past 30 days that the number of pieces that I have been able to successfully purchase has been (very suddenly) cut in half. Prices have doubled, and in some instances tripled, and I simply cannot justify going that high with my own limited budget. While I am a little bitter about the sudden diminishment in the number of pottery pieces that I am presently able to add to my collection, I take some degree of solace in the fact that there is now quite a robust potential market for the 10,000+ Pueblo ceramics that I already own. I have absolutely no interest in ever selling, but it is still heart-warming to know that the market is so strong. The same holds true for our ten million+ old comic books and magazines, which are gaining steadily in value as Covid-inspired nesting has reignited interest by thousands of fans to fill in holes in their runs of existing comics titles, and to also branch out into new genres. My having decided to go ahead with our annual half price back issue comics sale centered around the Halloween holiday has definitely thrown gasoline on a fire that was already burning quite briskly, so please do allow an extra week for orders to ship, as we are (once again) struggling to keep up. In case you are wondering, we are not adding any more staff right now to help with this surge in online orders because we are very concerned about the potential for another State-ordered shutdown of our Jason St. Mega-Store. While the vast 40,000 square feet of space in our retail portion of Jason St. Mega-Store provides more than enough room for excellent social distancing, and our 30' high ceilings allow for remarkably refreshing air circulation, our retail store is still classified as a "non-essential" business. That means that we are on the cusp of another possible shutdown, as Colorado set an all-time record for Covid-19 infections on Friday. If we are forced to shut down the retail store, we will continue to operate our online sales division, just as we did last spring. To avoid layoffs, members of our retail team will be (as much as possible) shifted over to help us to fill your online orders. While this continuity will allow us to survive another shutdown, it will tear the heart out of our critically-important holiday season, especially if any restrictions that might be imposed continue through Christmas. Suffice it to say, a 2nd shutdown is a nightmare scenario that has already begun to be imposed in parts of Europe, and may well be on the way for us here. That is precisely why I decided to begin our in-store Halloween sale a week early this year, with most of the collectibles in our huge store being made available right now on a "buy 2 - get 1 free" basis. Truth be told, I believe that this week may provide one last opportunity for those living in Colorado to shop in person in our store before Christmas. I realize that sounds a bit pessimistic and extreme, but the current trend lines in infections are truly worrisome. Better to be safe, than to be sorry... I will close today with a quick reminder that all of our back issue comics and magazines listed on our website are available to you right now at half price. That includes most of the new arrivals listed for you at the end of this newsletter. Only new issues, a few variants, and our professionally-graded comics are excluded from this massive 50% off HALLOWEEN! codeword sale. Please enjoy our great sale, and do stay safe. Happy collecting! Chuck Rozanski/Bettie Pages, Here are more new arrivals!
